I like the idea of standards - and so I would like to be able to read mail from harddisc rather than store them within a server-depending database. Courier-IMAP reads the mails from a Maildir-Folder, which makes it possible to read mails also with mutt.
Also the SSL setup is pretty easy.

Reading mails form everywhere - sometimes IMAP is blocked and also ssh sessions, so no change to read mails using Thunderbird or ssh to server and use mutt.
One of the most famous online mail interfaces is SquirrelMail. More or less easy-to-setup and fine working with Courier-IMAP server. Unfortunately, it has no imaps support, so I need to have the imap server running also without "s". But only for local access.

A photo album program including Java Applet for management. Lot of features after uploading images to server.
I decides that Version 1 is enough for me, but bigger albums might be faster with Version 2.

I needed a simple way of collecting some addresses, notes, remarks or even bigger documentation. TWiki is easy to setup and also enables one to limit access to Groups.
Afterwards, I got in contact with DokuWiki, which is less powerfull, minor used, but really easy to install.
