system setup
Here I would like to present my current system setup. This includes a list of software projects, I like to recommend.
I will show my purpose and reasons, why I decided to use them.
All of them are freely avail, most under GPL or LGPL.
concept
Main goals:
  • I try to minimise administrative work as much as possible for concentrating on the interesting parts, which always come to my mind.
  • Centralise everything - but try to make avail for others to share!
  • No need to have 24/7 systems at home - power consuming and noisy, I don't like
  • Storage - for backup and archive.
software
Application lists: desktop and server
hardware
There are four machines (named by consellations), which together fulfill my concept.
  • taurus - Server (vServer at Vollmar), which hosts my homepages and services for my private usage
  • musca - PC (AMD X2-5400), running Ubuntu/amd64 at home
  • niobe - (name given by working group) Notebook (ASUS A2500), running Ubuntu at work
  • libra - Notebook (ASUS eeePC), running enhanced Xandros for traveling
Musca and Niobe shre a $HOME directory by using the sync tool Unison.
Rested machines....
  • draco - Notebook (Asus M2000NE), my former home (and takeaway) machine now waiting for new tasks
  • ara - HomeServer (LinkSys NSLU2, patched with DebianSLUG), a patched NAS - a full network enabled computer.
Operating system: Debian- and/or Ubuntu-Linux
The only production operating system for me. Never looked at *BSD or alternatives, but why? I'm very happy with Debian-Linux on Taurus and Ara beside Ubuntu on Draco.
I got some experiences with SunOS/Solaris during my work for the BiBiServ, but this isn't a alternative for desktop IMHO.
